LNG cryogenic insulation has zero margin for error. Here's what experienced contractors do differently.
LNG service at -162°C punishes every flaw in design and execution. The same insulation system that works perfectly on chilled water at +5°C may fail catastrophically on a cryogenic transfer line.
Multi-layer PIR/PUR is the workhorse for LNG insulation. Properly staggered joints between layers, engineered expansion provisions, and continuous vapor barriers are the three non-negotiables.
Cold-bridge prevention is everything. Every pipe support, valve, instrument connection, or structural attachment is a potential cold-bridge that, unaddressed, becomes a condensation pump dumping water into the insulation.
Stainless cladding — 304L or 316L depending on service — is the only acceptable finish for LNG insulation. Aluminum will not survive the long-term thermal cycling at cryogenic temperatures.
Document everything. Layer-wise inspection records, material certificates, batch numbers, and joint-by-joint vapor-barrier seal verification are what protect both client and contractor over the 20-30 year service life of an LNG asset.
