Selecting the correct insulation system for refinery operations is one of the most consequential engineering decisions on a turnaround or new-build project. The wrong choice can lead to energy losses, CUI (corrosion under insulation), and frequent maintenance call-backs.
Modern refineries operate across a wide temperature band — from cryogenic LNG lines to high-temperature steam and process piping. Material selection must account for service temperature, vibration, expected lifespan, and code compliance (ASTM C547, ASHRAE 90.1).
Rockwool and calcium silicate remain the workhorses for hot insulation, while PIR/PUR systems dominate the cold and cryogenic space. For high-temperature applications above 650°C, ceramic fiber blankets are preferred.
Equally important is the cladding system that protects the insulation. Stainless steel offers superior corrosion resistance in coastal refineries; aluminum is lightweight and cost-effective for inland sites. Joint detailing, vapor barriers, and weatherproofing are where most failures originate.
When in doubt, partner with a contractor who treats insulation as a system — not a commodity. The right combination of material, thickness, cladding, and installation discipline pays back in years of trouble-free operation.
